What is GABAAR?
The GABA-A Receptor (GABAAR) is a protein in the brain that helps regulate the activity of neurons by controlling how they communicate with each other. It does this by allowing chloride ions to flow into neurons, which makes the neurons less likely to fire, calming down brain activity. GABAAR responds to a chemical called GABA, the brain’s main “inhibitory” neurotransmitter.
When GABAAR variants occur due to mutations, it means that the structure of the receptor changes. These mutations can affect how well the receptor functions. Here’s what can happen:
Impaired function: The mutated receptor might not respond as well to GABA, leading to excessive brain activity because neurons are not being “calmed down” properly.
Overactive or underactive receptors: Some mutations might cause the receptor to be either too sensitive or not sensitive enough to GABA, leading to imbalances in brain signaling.
Neurological effects: Mutations in GABAAR can lead to conditions like epilepsy, anxiety, developmental delays, or other neurological disorders because of disrupted neuron communication.
How Do GABAAR Variants Affect People?
